‘The sustainable development of the oceans: seabirds as indicators’

This project seeks to promote conservation policies that guarantee the sustainable development of the marine environment. Seabirds will be used as indicators of the impact of human activities in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as follows: (1) monitoring of the pelagic movements of seabirds and their relation with the oceanographic properties of the marine surface; (2) analysis and evaluation of the impact of certain pollutants on the seabird community; (3) a genetic study of population structuring and the repercussions of their fragmentation and dwindling size and, finally, (4) a study of the impact of South American longliners on palearctic seabirds wintering in the southern hemisphere.
