DESCRIPTION
The idea is to synthesise the information available on these two species, in order to draw up patterns of geographical variation and gene flow on a regional scale. We will also supplement the A. chilensis study by using the Twogener method to examine how fragmentation has affected gene flow. Common environment studies previously conducted on the research populations will be evaluated (growth, delta-13), comparing patterns of variation with those obtained for molecular markers.
This will allow us to analyse the relationship between molecular and adaptive changes in the two species. Each population will be characterised with reference to criteria and indicators relating to the risk to which it is exposed, and its chief characteristics. Setting these results alongside the molecular and phenotypic description of the same populations will help us identify those in need of conservation.
We propose a dynamic strategy (based mainly on conservation in situ) aimed at creating a favourable environment for the future evolution of the genetic resource under changing conditions. This strategy fits with global objectives of the Euforgen Programme for the conservation of forest genetic resources.
