‘Emerging diseases in amphibians: a grave threat to biodiversity’

Amphibians are among the world’s most endangered animal groups. In general, the disruption or destruction of their habitats is confining them to small areas which enjoy some form of official protection. The problem is compounded by the emergence of a new, extremely serious threat which also affects protected spaces. Diseases, mainly of fungal origin, which have recently appeared or whose area of incidence has increased dramatically in the last few years are causing the mass extinction of populations and species throughout the world, and could, in a not too distant future, wipe out most of the amphibians on our planet. The current state of knowledge on amphibians’ diseases is fairly rudimentary and urgently needs enlarging to prevent their disappearance.
